Performing the Whole Self

These workshops are designed to awaken the mind/body connection in improvisation and performance.  Whether improvising, devising a new piece, or in daily life, the performance is already happening, we just have to tap into it.  Workshops are open to anyone of any background or experience, not limited to performing artists.

Part I : April 3 - 24

This first experiential workshop focuses on awareness as performance.  We will look at all aspects of the live body in the performing space as they join to form experience and expression.  We will explore presence, the most basic component of live performance, in relationship to the audience, spatial choreography and as a manifestation of our inner experience from moment to moment to moment.  Exercises train attention to the subtle moving energetics of the body and offer tools to explore, devise and play in this state of heightened awareness.  Participants will be guided through solo and group work all in the spirit of collaboration.  Learn how simple it is to perform by igniting curiousity and joy in the process.

Part II : May 1 - 29

This workshop advances vocal and movement techniques introduced in April.  Participants will learn techniques to access and open the voice through an approach that is playful and physical, grounded in the movement that vocal expression naturally provokes.  We will identify points of focus and imagery within movement exploration and develop vocabulary for spatial composition and choreography.  Exercises tap into the physical and energetic aspects deeply embedded in our bodies, further integrating mind and body in deeper awareness within the performing space.

Molly Jaeger has been practicing and developing these techniques since 2001.  The approach is grounded in the work of pioneering producer, director and teacher, Scott Kelman.  Molly studied intensively with Kelman, as a student, performer and assistant teacher from 2001 to 2004.  In addition to Chicago, she has taught workshops in Portland OR, The Circus Center in Boulder CO, The National Theatre of Colombia in Bogota and Leeds University Workshop Theatre in the UK
